Warning: date() [function.date]: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) on the Playstation 3

Downloading

Installing OtherOS

If you updated to firmware 1.6 then you only need otheros.bld which is the bootloader.

On the Ubuntu ISO you can find the otheros.bld, or you can use any other compatible loader.

1) Copy the ‘otheros.bld’ to ‘/PS3/otheros/otheros.bld’ on a USB stick.

2) Plug the USB stick into the PS3.

3) Go to ‘Settings → System Settings → Install Other OS’.

The following installer items were found:
  Title /PS3/otheros/otheros.bld
  Location USB Device

4) Set the default system to OtherOS.

5) Format the hdd.

Booting the Ubuntu LiveCD

1) To install at a different resolution, at the kboot prompt type:

live video=ps3fb:mode:<video mode id>

Some valid video modes:

  • (YUV 60Hz) 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
  • (YUV 50Hz) 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
  • (RGB 60Hz) 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
  • (RGB 50Hz) 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
  • (VESA) 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA

Installing Ubuntu

1) Start the Install Program

After the desktop has finished loading, double-click on the ‘Install’ icon.

2) Select the Default Language

Ubuntu can be installed with support for many different languages. Select your preferred language, then click ‘Forward’.

3) Select Your Location

Either click on the city closest to your location, or use the drop-down box to select your timezone, then click ‘Forward’.

4) Select Your Keyboard Layout

Ubuntu can be installed with support for many different keyboard layouts. Select your keyboard layout, then click ‘Forward’.

5) Partition the Harddrive

Ubuntu needs to know how to use the harddrive space you set aside earlier for OtherOS. It is easiest to let it automatically use the entire space by selecting the following, then click ‘Forward’.

(*) Guided - use entire disk
 (*) SCSI2(0,0,0)(sda) - 10.7 GB SCEI Sec:Master-3
 ( ) SCSI3(0,0,0)(sdb) - 4.2 MB SCEI Flash-5
( ) Manual

The installer will warn you about the lack of a ‘NewWorld boot partition’. As you will be using the OtherOS bootloader, it is safe to ignore this warning and click ‘Continue’.

6) Document and Settings Migration

Ubuntu will search for any existing installations of Linux and present you with a list if any were found. Chances are it will find none as this is a fresh install. Click ‘Forward’.

7) Who Are You?

Ubuntu now needs to know more about you, the main user. Enter your name, username, password and give the computer a name. Then click ‘Forward’.

8) Ready to Install

The installer will now give you an overview of the installation information before finally starting to install. Verify that everything looks accurate, then click ‘Install’.

The installer will warn you again about the lack of a ‘NewWorld boot partition’. As you will be using the OtherOS bootloader, it is safe to ignore this warning and click ‘Continue’.

9) Reboot* Blah blah blah. Click on ‘Restart now’.
